SPRING BREAK
Spring break is fast approaching for some and for others, you have already been through it! There are so many activities set up for children over spring break. Check out my Events page at http://www.childsafetyprofessionals.com/newsandevents.html for a complete list of camps and activities.
When we think of Spring, most of us think of Spring cleaning and Spring break! I am going to go over a few areas of the home we may not think about when SPRING cleaning.
Medicine Cabinet
Spring is a good time to go through your medicine cabinet and get rid of any medicines that are expired. Also many parents seem to end up with left-over prescriptions. This is a good time to get rid of all of the above.
Broken Toys
Of course, during spring cleaning, parents go through their children’s toys and get rid of toys that they no longer play with or have grown out of. Spring cleaning is also an opportunity for parents to ensure that the toys their children do play with are not broken or cracked. Also ensure that any weak or loose parts that could fall off are taken off so that they do not become a choking hazard. You may also want to check battery operated toys that are not often used and make sure that the batteries are not leaking. It also gives you an opportunity to repair any toys that are damaged.
Make sure that you also check any of their ride-on toys, bikes and skateboards to ensure that all the screws and bolts are tight. Check their protective gear as well, especially their helmet to ensure there are NO cracks!
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Check that all of the smoke detectors in the house and working properly and you may want to change the batteries at this time as well. You should also test the carbon monoxide detector as well. Again change the batteries in the carbon monoxide detector as well. You should really check these two detectors monthly.
Child Safety Products
This is a good time to go around your home and check all of your childproofing safety products to ensure they are all working properly and secured.
Recalls There are many toy and child product recalls. You should check the recall lists once a month to ensure that you do not own any of the recalled products. A good site to refer to is http://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/index-eng.php
SPRING BREAK Now is a good time to refresh your children’s memory regarding strangers. Also, go over playground safety rules as well. Parents, remember to also apply sunscreen on your children when it is sunny, even though it is not warm outside. Sunscreen is always a good idea.
PRODUCT OF THE MONTH This is a great product. It is the Gummi crib rail. It attaches onto the railing of your child’s crib. I know with my kids, they were always putting their mouth and trying to bite and chew the railing of their crib. This Gummi crib rail provides protection to baby’s mouth and teeth. I wish I knew about this product when my kids were younger! *Please note that all tips are offered as suggestions only. While we have tried to provide you with some suggestions to help parents keep their kids safe, unfortunately we cannot think of everything and it is the responsibility of parents to ensure their children’s safety.
